Chapter 10 of 31 · 16 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 10, Catherine strengthens her acquaintance with Miss Tilney and happily dances with Henry Tilney despite John Thorpe’s claim on her attention. While Isabella and James increasingly occupy each other, Catherine enjoys Henry’s playful conversation, learns who his father is, and arranges a country walk with the brother and sister.
What happens
- At the theater, Isabella praises Catherine, discusses her agreement with James, and then spends the evening talking to him.
- At the pump room, Catherine escapes the absorbed pair and makes a friendly connection with Miss Tilney.
- On Thursday evening, Catherine avoids John Thorpe and gladly accepts Henry Tilney’s invitation to dance.
- John claims Catherine has promised him a dance, then talks about horses until the crowd carries him away.
- Henry compares dancing with marriage, discusses Bath with Catherine, and identifies General Tilney as his father.
- Catherine and the Tilneys arrange a country walk for noon the next day, provided it does not rain.

What to notice
Henry turns John’s interruption into a playful discussion of exclusive attention and mutual duties. Catherine’s literal objections reveal the difference between his teasing manner and her direct understanding.
