In Chapter 1, ten-year-old Jimmy travels from Virginia toward his grandparents in Nebraska with Jake Marpole, hears about Ántonia, and reaches Black Hawk at night. As Otto Fuchs drives them across the prairie, the unfamiliar openness makes Jimmy feel separated from his parents, his old home, and ordinary human protection.
What happens
- After losing both parents, Jimmy travels west with Jake Marpole to live with his grandparents in Nebraska.
- A friendly conductor mentions an immigrant girl bound for Black Hawk, but Jimmy feels shy and refuses an introduction.
- At Black Hawk, Jimmy sees the immigrant family and hears a foreign language for the first time.
- Otto Fuchs meets Jimmy and Jake, collects their trunks, and takes them toward the grandparents’ home by wagon.
- Under the open sky, Jimmy feels cut off from his familiar world and accepts whatever happens without praying.

What to notice
The vast landscape makes Jimmy feel small and detached from his former life. His arrival brings uncertainty rather than a clear sense of belonging.
Quick check
Why does Jimmy decline the conductor’s offer to meet the immigrant girl?
