In Chapter 20, Dorothea weeps in Rome as marriage fails to bring the understanding and shared purpose she expects, and her offer to help Mr. Casaubon provokes their first angry exchange. Their disagreement exposes mutual loneliness: she seeks meaningful service and affection, while he hears criticism of his unfinished scholarship.

  3. The account returns to breakfast, when Mr. Casaubon discusses leaving Rome and offers Dorothea work copying his notes.
  4. Dorothea urges him to begin his book, but he hears an attack on his scholarship and answers angrily.
  5. She defends her wish to help, and both feel shocked by their quarrel.
  6. They keep their planned Vatican visit; Dorothea wanders unhappily through the Museum, yet seeks something better than despair.
