Chapter 4 of 55 · 31 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 4, Mr Pecksniff joins relatives gathering around Martin Chuzzlewit and hosts a council intended to challenge the influence of Martin’s young companion. Their shared interest in his property cannot overcome their quarrels, and news that Martin has departed turns the gathering against its host.

What happens

  1. Mr Pecksniff watches Martin’s room and meets Montague Tigg, who seeks money and proposes cooperation among the competing relatives.
  2. More relatives arrive, but Martin refuses their communications and remains secluded with his young companion.
  3. The family gathers at Mr Pecksniff’s house, where disputes over status and personal insults interrupt his welcome.
  4. The relatives agree in accusing Martin’s companion of seeking his property, but renewed quarrels drive several guests away.
  5. Mr Spottletoe returns with news of Martin’s departure, and the remaining guests leave after accusing Pecksniff of arranging their disappointment.
