Homer, Chapter 5 summary

Chapter 5 of 26 · 6 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 5, Hector and Ajax fight until dusk, and both armies pause to burn their dead while the Greeks build defenses around their ships. When fighting resumes, Jupiter favors Troy and checks Greek resistance, leaving the Greeks trapped behind their defenses as Hector’s army camps nearby for the night.

What happens

  1. After Nestor shames the reluctant Greek leaders, Ajax wins the lot to face Hector, and their duel ends without a victor at dusk.
  2. Both armies recover their dead, but peace fails when Paris offers treasure without Helen and the Greeks reject the proposal.
  3. The Greeks fortify their fleet, feast on supplies of wine, and offer libations amid threatening thunder.
  4. Jupiter forbids divine interference, weighs the armies’ fates, and sends lightning against the Greeks.
  5. Diomed rescues Nestor but retreats before divine warnings, while Teucer shoots Trojans until Hector disables him with a rock.
  6. Night prevents the fleet’s destruction, and the Trojans camp on the plain while Hector fears a Greek escape.
