Chapter 21 of 26 · 10 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 21, Penelope tests Ulysses through the secret of their marriage bed and finally accepts him, while Laertes also recognizes his son and a rebellion collapses. The account then distinguishes his unresolved duty to Neptune from other traditions that imagine his death or renewed voyages into unknown seas.
What happens
- Penelope doubts the report of Ulysses’ return, while he orders music and dancing to conceal the slaughter from outsiders.
- Her request to move their marriage bed draws his revealing protest, and she embraces him as her husband.
- Minerva extends their night together; among the dead, Agamemnon praises Penelope’s loyalty and contrasts it with Clytemnestra’s betrayal.
- Ulysses proves his identity to Laertes through his scar and childhood memories of trees his father gives him.
- Laertes kills the rebellion’s leader, and the surviving rebels submit to Ulysses after a short fight.
- The narrator describes Ulysses’ unfulfilled religious duty and surveys other accounts of his death and further seafaring.
