In Chapter 7, nearly three thousand miners gather in the forest, where Étienne wins support for continuing the strike and Rasseneur faces rejection for urging compromise. After Bonnemort recalls earlier suffering, the meeting turns increasingly violent, and Chaval answers accusations of betrayal by promising support at Jean-Bart, where the crowd agrees to assemble.
What happens
- Nearly three thousand people gather at the Plan-des-Dames, and Étienne takes the floor despite Rasseneur’s demand for elected officers.
- Étienne reports dwindling resources, attacks the Company, and urges collective ownership and a complete rebuilding of society.
- The crowd rejects Rasseneur’s calls for gradual change, throwing moss and stones until he leaves.
- Bonnemort recalls deaths and failed strikes, and Étienne uses his suffering to renew demands for resistance.
- The gathering votes to continue striking, and Étienne confronts Chaval over continued work at Jean-Bart.
- Chaval proposes stopping engines and pumps, violent demands multiply, and the crowd agrees to meet at Jean-Bart the next morning.
