Flatland, Section 21 summary

Section 21 of 22 · Part 2: Other Worlds “O brave new worlds, that have such people in them!” · 4 min to read the section

In Section 21, the narrator abandons open preaching after hearing the Council’s threat of punishment and instead tries to teach his mathematically gifted Grandson about three dimensions. The boy fears the new law, rejects his earlier suggestion, and laughs when his grandfather cannot demonstrate the movement he describes.

What happens

  1. The narrator wakes eager to spread knowledge of three dimensions, beginning with his Wife.
  2. A herald announces punishments for claims about another world, so the narrator chooses mathematical demonstration instead of personal revelation.
  3. He avoids teaching his Sons, misleads his Wife about the mysterious visitor, and summons his Grandson as his first pupil.
  4. Behind a locked door, he reviews how points and lines generate figures and asks about a square moving beyond two dimensions.
  5. The repeated proclamation frightens the Grandson, who denies seriously suggesting a third dimension.
  6. The narrator fails to demonstrate the movement with a square, and his laughing Grandson leaves.

What to notice

The question exposes the obstacle to the lesson: the boy treats the unfamiliar direction as impossible. His fear of authority reinforces that refusal.

Quick check

Why does the narrator choose his Grandson rather than his Sons as a pupil?
