In Section 15, the narrator rejects his youngest grandson’s suggestion that cubing a number has a geometrical meaning, but a mysterious visitor appears and contradicts him. The visitor’s changing size confounds the narrator’s observations, and his request for a private conversation clears the room as the third Millennium begins.

What happens

  1. On the final night of 1999, the narrator recalls a geometry lesson in which his youngest grandson asks what the third power represents.
  2. The grandson proposes that a moving square produces another shape, but the narrator dismisses his reasoning and sends him to bed.
  3. As the narrator repeats his criticism, an unseen voice defends the boy and affirms the geometrical meaning of cubing.
  4. A strange figure appears, and the narrator notices that its apparent size changes.
  5. The narrator’s wife touches the visitor, discovers no angles, and apologizes for mistaking him for a woman.
  6. The visitor requests privacy with the narrator, the wife withdraws, and the hourglass marks the third Millennium’s beginning.
