Chapter 8 of 41 · 6 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 8, Anne Shirley receives her first marriage proposal through Jane Andrews, who speaks for her shy brother Billy, and firmly refuses because she does not love him. The experience makes Anne laugh, but it also disappoints her cherished hope that her first proposal would become a beautiful romantic memory.

What happens

  1. On a stormy night at the year's end, Jane Andrews stays with Anne and asks what she thinks of Billy.
  2. Jane explains that Billy wants to marry Anne and now owns a farm, but feels too shy to ask himself.
  3. Anne firmly refuses, despite Jane's praise of Billy's character and willingness to wait until she finishes college.
  4. Jane reacts coldly, mentions Nettie Blewett as another possible bride, and asks Anne to keep the offer secret.
  5. After Jane leaves the next morning, Anne laughs alone but feels disappointed by the contrast with her romantic dreams.
