About this book

Behind a family name lie generations of marriages, children, moves, and memories waiting to be traced.

In Horton Genealogy, Geo. F. Horton gathers the names and relationships of the Horton family into a lasting record. Marriages and children connect one generation to the next. As you follow those connections, a family line becomes a way to see how people move, work, and settle over time.

This is family history in record form, not a story driven by plot. It belongs to a nineteenth-century American tradition of preserving ancestry in print. Names, marriages, and children offer a path through the family’s past, keeping connections between relatives available for later generations to explore.

What you’ll discover

  • A family in writing See how names, marriages, and children preserve the connections that hold a family history together.
  • Paths through the generations Follow relationships across generations and find your way through the branches of the Horton family.
  • Lives beyond the names Look beyond individual entries to discover patterns of movement, work, marriage, and settlement.
  • The work of remembering Explore why family connections matter to descendants who want to understand where they belong.
  • Clues for your search Look for towns, periods, and spellings that may help guide your own family research.

What is Horton Genealogy about?

It records the descendants of Barnabas Horton, a Puritan who settled Southold, Long Island, in 1640. Entries run generation by generation, with stories, wills, letters and obituaries added along the way.

Who was Barnabas Horton?

He was an English Puritan born at Mousely in Leicestershire. He settled at Southold in 1640, served as a magistrate, built the first timber-framed house at the eastern end of Long Island, and died in 1680 aged eighty.

What is the old castle in Southold?

It is the house Barnabas began in 1659 and 1660, later extended by his son Jonathan. Six generations of Hortons lived and died there, and the author thinks it is probably the oldest wooden house in America.
