About this book

In cattle country, swagger catches the eye—but nerve earns a reputation when trouble comes.

Published in 1918, Oh, You Tex! by William MacLeod Raine takes you into a bright, adventurous West of open country and strong personalities. A bold hero, a plain code of right and wrong, and trouble that calls for courage give this tale its shape. Here, a man’s actions matter more than his claims.

The shout of “Oh, You Tex!” sets this novel’s friendly, swaggering mood: it sounds like a cheer for a man with style to spare. Born in England, Raine grows up in the United States and spends much of his working life in Denver, Colorado. What is Oh, You Tex! about?

It follows Jack Roberts, a young line rider nicknamed Tex, who becomes a Texas Ranger in the Panhandle. He tracks rustlers, protects a prisoner from a mob, and falls for the cattle king's daughter, Ramona Wadley.

Who are the Dinsmores in Oh, You Tex!?

Pete and Homer Dinsmore lead a gang of rustlers and holdup men who work out of the rimrock and Box Canyon. Roberts and Captain Ellison spend much of the book trying to catch them.

Why is the hero called Tex?

Roberts earned the nickname in New Mexico by loudly defending his home state, and it stuck when he went back to the Panhandle. The book's title is a cheer that Jumbo Wilkins shouts.
