About this book
What if the world beneath your feet holds the strange lands you long to explore?
Baron Trump has a restless mind, a taste for danger and little wish to leave the unknown alone. In Ingersoll Lockwood's children's adventure, the bold young nobleman sets out to explore below the earth. His journey opens a world of peculiar realms, where curiosity draws him onward and strange places invite him to test his cleverness.
The pleasure lies in discovery: odd ideas, hidden worlds and a playful sense of wonder. Lockwood brings a formal, lively style to this tale of a young traveller seeking marvels. For readers drawn to Victorian curiosities, the journey also offers a glimpse of the underground adventures that stirred imaginations in the nineteenth century.

A restless dog sends the baron travelling
At Castle Trump the baron sits buried in a crumbling manuscript called A World within a World. Its author is the Spaniard Don Fum, a thinker of the fifteenth century. Don Fum argues that the globe is hollow, and that people fled below after terrible upheavals and built a world within a world. The baron reads all day and far into the night.
Meanwhile Bulger is miserable. Half a dozen mongrel dogs bark on the lawn to lure him out for a romp. The next morning he tugs the baron's dressing gown and leads him to the dining room. An old tabby cat and four kittens are lapping up the breakfast from his silver plate.
