About this book
On a Prince Edward Island farm, a homemade newspaper and a gifted storyteller turn small adventures into a whole childhood.
In L. M. Montgomery's The Golden Road, Beverley King looks back on life at the family homestead in Carlisle. He and his younger brother Felix stay with their cousins, sharing quarrels, schemes, and discoveries. At the heart of their world is Sara Stanley, the Story Girl, whose tales make ordinary days shine.
The children start their own newspaper, Our Magazine, and find plenty to stir their imaginations beyond the farm. There is the feared Peg Bowen and a lonely man who lives apart. Rather than follow one grand plot, the novel moves through small adventures and changing seasons, with laughter close to the gentle sadness of growing up.

A winter plan gives each child a job
It begins on a wild November night in Uncle Alec's kitchen, with rain on the roof. The cousins have played blind man's buff until the game goes flat. Beverley then offers an idea he has hatched in secret with the Story Girl. They will write a newspaper of their own and fill it with everything they do.
The Story Girl knows Felicity will oppose anything she suggests. So she sneers at the plan out loud, and Felicity jumps to defend it, with Peter close behind.

What is The Golden Road about?
It follows one year in the lives of the King cousins and their friends on a Prince Edward Island farm, with their handwritten magazine, stories, pranks, weddings, and the quiet change that comes as childhood moves on.
Who is the Story Girl in The Golden Road?
She is Sara Stanley, a fifteen-year-old cousin with a golden voice, who tells tales from old books and neighbors. She lives nearby, loves the color red, and sees colors in every thought she has.
Is The Golden Road a sequel to The Story Girl?
Yes. It continues with the same children and farm households and refers to the first volume of the family chronicles. It reads well on its own, since every chapter gives a clear, self-contained scene.
