About this book
In an Irish pine wood, reason meets its match in leprechauns, wandering gods, and a hidden crock of gold.
Two old philosophers live with their wives in a pine wood, arguing about the nature of things. Nearby, leprechauns guard their buried gold. In James Stephens’s The Crock of Gold, these neighbours share a countryside where lofty ideas meet practical needs, and the Philosopher’s trust in reason faces tests that thought alone may not answer.
Meehawl MacMurrachu has a family to feed and finds himself caught in trouble surrounding the gold. His daughter, Caitilin Ny Murrachu, hears the pipes of Pan, while Angus Og brings the presence of Irish myth. As the story wanders towards towns, officials, and police, jokes about money and law sit beside a searching question: where does wisdom lie?

Two Philosophers and their wives share a dark wood
The story begins in Coilla Doraca, a pine wood so deep that no sun or wind reaches the little house in its middle. Two Philosophers live there. They are wiser than anyone except the Salmon of Knowledge, and they can answer any question.
Two women of the fairy people called the Shee, the Thin Woman and the Grey Woman, are so annoyed at being answered that they marry the Philosophers, partly to pinch them in bed. The husbands never notice. Two children are born on the same day. The mothers cannot bear their own babies, so they swap them and become loving mothers at once. Seumas Beg and Brigid Beg grow up among rabbits, goats and birds.
