About this book
What if the best company in a lonely churchyard is already dead?
In Olive Harper’s The Sociable Ghost, a newspaper reporter finds himself among the old graves of Trinity Churchyard after dark. His midnight journey leads into company that is not quite alive. Yet this is a ghost story where curiosity and wit matter more than terror.
The reporter brings a questioning eye to a place filled with traces of other lives. The ghost brings something less expected: a sociable spirit. Harper turns the lonely churchyard into a setting for gentle gothic humour, where the dead can seem less frightening than the living.

A heartbroken reporter meets a thirsty ghost
The story opens at the northwest end of Trinity Church, where a flat stone covers an old family vault. A young reporter sits there in the dark. He has written up the wedding presents for his paper that day, and the bride is the girl he loves.
His mood is so bad that he kicks a little dog and throws a stone at a kitten. It is the first time he has hurt an animal, and his conscience stings. Then a shadow rises from a grave, rattles like dry oyster shells, and complains that without tobacco he is tempted to stay dead.

What is The Sociable Ghost about?
A heartbroken reporter spends one night in Trinity churchyard in New York, where the dead rise for a yearly banquet, ball and convention. A talkative ghost guides him and tells funny and sad stories of how the dead are treated.
What does passport mean in The Sociable Ghost?
The ghosts speak of getting a passport, which means a release from their bones and a move to a better state. They do not know exactly what follows, but they believe it must be earned by honesty and by losing false pride.
Why do the ghosts scrub their gravestones?
The ghosts hate the flattering epitaphs that families carved on their stones. They think the praise is false and wish to rub it away, hoping that doing so will bring them nearer to release.
