About this book

What happens when bloodthirsty pirates look as foolish as they do fearsome?

In Wappin' Wharf, Charles S. Brooks brings pirates to the stage in a comedy of rogues, schemes and dark humor. The waterfront gives these figures their setting: a place where ships tie up, cargo changes hands and sailors spend their pay. Here, the promise of swashbuckling adventure meets the pleasure of seeing villains made ridiculous.

This is pirate burlesque, not a realistic history of life at sea. Brooks brings the light, bookish wit of his essays into a theatrical world of fearsome reputations and comic foolishness. The appeal lies in that contrast: rogues invite laughter as well as unease, and the pirate adventure takes a turn toward the absurd.

Retired pirates keep house on a cliff

The play opens with a prologue spoken to the audience. The time is remote, and Brooks refuses to give a date, so that no broken fact can spoil his plot. The scene is the wind-swept coast of Devon, where Clovelly climbs from the shore in a single street that is really a staircase. High above it, on a storm-blown crag, stands the pirates' cabin.

What is Wappin' Wharf about?

It is a comic play about retired pirates living in a cabin above Clovelly in Devon. They wreck ships with a false lantern, and a girl who cannot remember her past and a young newcomer disturb their routine.

Who wrote Wappin' Wharf and when was it first performed?

Charles S. Brooks wrote it. It was first performed in January 1922 at the Play House in Cleveland, with sets and costumes by Julia McCune Flory and music by Gordon Hatfield.

Why is it called Wappin' Wharf?

Wapping Wharf was a landing place on the Thames in London where pirates were once hanged. Brooks chose the name because the gibbet there hangs over every pirate's thoughts and the characters speak of it often.
