About this book
What if the most valuable gift in a room full of secrets is the power to lift someone’s spirits?
In The Brightener, C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson bring together romance, polite society and a gentle mystery. Drawing rooms, manners and social ambition shape a world where appearances matter. Beneath its charm lies a question worth lingering over: how do people treat one another when they have something to hide?
The title points to the tale’s warm heart: a person with a gift for leaving others happier. Here, kindness is an art, set alongside the puzzles of society and the pull of romance. The Williamsons’ light, sociable touch invites you to enjoy the secrets without losing sight of the people who keep them.

A penniless princess invents her own job
The story opens in a hidden garden in Rome. Elizabeth sits in a hollow cut into a tree, hiding from a ball she did not want to attend. Two guests stop outside and gossip about a double blow that has fallen on someone. One voice belongs to Sir James Courtenaye, a red-haired American cousin who has annoyed her family for years. She soon learns the someone is herself.
Her grandmother is dead. The telegram that killed the old lady brought word that Elizabeth's young husband, Prince Paolo, died in a plane crash. He had gone back to the Front an hour after their wedding. A legal tangle over an entail leaves Elizabeth with almost nothing, and the family home, Courtenaye Abbey, is at risk.
