About this book
What if a child understands more than every adult around him, yet finds no place among them?
In a quiet English village, Victor Stott is born with an unusually large head and a mind beyond anyone he meets. His father, Ginger Stott, knows cricket but cannot grasp his son. As Victor grows, his difference unsettles the ordinary world around him.
Challis, a learned neighbour with a library, sees a mind where others see a curiosity. He tries to befriend and teach Victor. In The Hampdenshire Wonder, J. D. Beresford brings science fiction into village life, asking how people respond to someone whose understanding reaches far beyond their own.

A baby on a train silences grown men
The narrator is reading Bergson in a railway compartment when a thin woman in black gets in, holding a baby. He thinks the child a freak and turns back to his page. Then he looks up, and the baby is staring at him with clear, calm, unmistakable intelligence.
The child turns its gaze on the other passengers. A shabby man lowers his paper and droops. A red-faced man in gold spectacles suggests water on the brain. The baby looks at him with pity and contempt, and he shrinks back like a boy who has thrown pebbles at a lion and seen it rise.

What is The Hampdenshire Wonder about?
It tells the story of Victor Stott, a boy with an enormous mind born to a cricketer and his plain wife. The book follows how his family, his village, a rector and a scholar react to a child they cannot understand.
Who is Victor Stott in The Hampdenshire Wonder?
Victor Stott is the son of the cricketer Ginger Stott and Ellen Mary. He is called the Wonder because of his huge head and mind, which let him read whole libraries and speak in language few can follow.
Is The Hampdenshire Wonder a true story?
No, it is a work of fiction by J. D. Beresford, published in 1911. The narrator claims to rely on firsthand accounts, but the events and the characters are imagined, set among real English places such as cricket grounds and village churches.
