About this book
Must a daughter answer for her mother's crime—or can she escape the verdict written into her family name?
In Wilkie Collins's The Legacy of Cain, a woman condemned to death leaves behind a young daughter. Mr. Gracedieu, a clergyman, raises the child alongside his own daughter. Eunice and Helena grow up as sisters, while the question of inherited evil hangs over the household: does blood determine character?
As the sisters enter adulthood, love, jealousy, and rivalry test their loyalty. Their own writing joins accounts from older people who believe they understand them. Each perspective invites you to weigh feeling against judgment, as a troubling argument about parentage becomes an intimate struggle within the family.

A condemned mother bargains for her child
The novel opens in an English prison in 1858. The Governor tells the story years later. He calls the condemned woman only the Prisoner, because she killed her husband and will hang the next morning.
She has heard a Congregational Minister preach and admired him. Now she asks whether he is married, whether he has children, and whether he is comfortable in money. The Chaplain answers each question and cannot guess her purpose. The Governor sends for the Minister, who arrives pale and shaken.

What is The Legacy of Cain about?
A Minister adopts the infant daughter of a condemned murderess and raises her beside his own child. Years later, two sisters, a young man and a scheming woman bring the hidden past to light, and the question of inherited evil returns.
Is The Legacy of Cain a true story?
No, it is fiction. Wilkie Collins published it in 1888, and it was among his last novels. It draws on Victorian interest in heredity, crime and family scandal, and it is told through a memoir, diaries and letters.
What does the title The Legacy of Cain mean?
Cain was the first murderer in the Bible. The title asks whether guilt and violence can pass from parent to child, and the story tests that idea against love, upbringing and free will.
