About this book

Learning to behave like a gentleman is one thing. Making good decisions is quite another.

In Frank E. Smedley’s comic novel, Frank Fairlegh tells his own story of growing up among private pupils. Under a tutor’s care, he faces lessons that reach well beyond answering questions. He must hold his own with other young men, find friends, and work out what deserves his respect.

Friendship brings warmth, mischief, and fresh complications. Frank’s companions help shape his ideas of courage, generosity, and shame, but growing older asks more of him. As pupil life opens into wider social encounters and romantic interests, the gap between gentlemanly manners and sound judgment gives the story its lively comic edge.

What you’ll discover

  • A pupil’s own story Follow Frank’s account of the experiences that carry him from boyhood toward adult life.
  • Lessons beyond the tutor Discover why holding your own in company takes more than knowing the right answers.
  • Friendship with real influence Meet companions who shape what Frank thinks it means to be brave or generous.
  • Mischief meets good manners Enjoy the comic distance between learning gentlemanly behavior and choosing what to do.
  • A wider world ahead Follow youthful scrapes into social encounters and romantic interests that ask more of Frank.

A green boy arrives at Helmstone

Frank leaves home with two sets of orders. His father tells him to keep within his allowance. His mother tells him to read his Bible and wear his flannel waistcoats. The coach ride is miserable, because water from the roof has found its way under one of those waistcoats. Frank admits he does not fall into a fine reverie, as a hero would. He simply wants to be dry.
