About this book

What happens when a son brings home a friend who rejects everything his father holds dear?

Arkady Kirsanov returns from university to his father's country estate with Evgeny Bazarov, a proud medical student who trusts only science. His gentle father, Nikolai, wants to understand him. His uncle Pavel bristles at Bazarov's contempt for old principles and manners. Around the tea table, a homecoming becomes a clash over how to live.

In Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons, Russia stands between cautious reform and demands to tear the old order down. Arkady admires Bazarov, yet longs for family and a settled life. Bazarov calls himself a nihilist, but his convictions face the claims of love, beauty and feeling. Turgenev watches both generations with calm attention, finding faults without taking easy sides.

A father waits on a bench for his son

The novel opens on May 20, 1859, at a posting station. Nikolai Petrovitch Kirsanov, a gray, slightly lame landowner of about forty-four, sits on a bench and asks his servant Peter whether the carriage is in sight. Turgenev uses the wait to tell Nikolai's life. He married for love, lost his wife in 1847, and turned to estate reform. His one pride is his son Arkady.

What is Fathers and Sons about?

It tells of Arkady Kirsanov and his friend Bazarov, a Nihilist, who visit family estates and clash with the older generation over authority, tradition, love and the future of Russia, just before the serfs are freed.

What does Nihilist mean in Fathers and Sons?

In the book, a Nihilist is someone who accepts no authority and takes no principle on faith. Bazarov believes only in facts and usefulness, and he denies poetry, art and old customs, which alarms Arkady's relatives.

When was Fathers and Sons written and is it a true story?

Ivan Turgenev published it in 1862. It is fiction, but it draws on real debates in Russia around 1859, when landowners, peasants and the educated young argued about reform and the end of serfdom.
