About this book
What does love demand when following your heart means turning against duty?
In Beatrice, H. Rider Haggard turns from adventure to the dangers of private feeling. Love cannot freely take its course. The Victorian world sets firm rules around marriage, reputation and honour, leaving those caught between duty and desire to weigh what they want against what they owe to others.
This romance explores sacrifice without making its meaning simple. What do people give up for love, and when is that giving noble, foolish, or both? Haggard brings these questions into a story told in full, rounded prose, with a narrator who pauses to reflect on events and human nature.

A Canoe Appears Out of the Mist
On her twenty-second birthday, Beatrice Granger stands on the Dog Rocks as mist settles over the bay. A mile up the coast, the London barrister Geoffrey Bingham sits on a stone, waiting for a dead curlew to drift closer. He forgot the tide, and now deep water cuts him off from land.
Beatrice hears his shots and paddles toward them. She picks the bird from the water and hands it up, and he is startled that she knows his name. She teaches at the school he visited with his wife the day before.

What is Beatrice by H. Rider Haggard about?
It follows a clever Welsh schoolmistress, Beatrice Granger, and a married barrister, Geoffrey Bingham, brought together by a canoe rescue in a storm. Their love, a jealous sister and a possessive squire drive a story about duty, faith and sacrifice.
Who is Owen Davies in Beatrice?
Owen Davies is the wealthy, silent squire of Bryngelly Castle, a former sailor who inherited his estate. He has loved Beatrice for years and presses her to marry him. His devotion mixes tenderness with religious certainty and growing jealousy.
Where is Beatrice set and when was it written?
The story takes place on the Welsh coast in the fictional village of Bryngelly, in the Victorian era, with scenes in London law courts and the House of Commons. Haggard wrote it as a romance of his own time, not a true story.
