About this book

What if the work you love seems useless to the person who wants to change the world?

Aurora Leigh wants to write great poetry and earn her living by it. Her cousin Romney wants to ease the suffering of the poor. In Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s novel in blank verse, their ambitions collide with love, money and expectations about a woman’s place. Aurora tells her own story, from childhood in Italy to the struggle for an independent life.

An English aunt hopes to see Aurora suitably married. Romney questions the value of art while people starve. Marian Erle, a poor seamstress with a harsh childhood, binds the cousins’ lives together. Through arguments, landscapes and the tender comedy of Aurora’s ivy poet’s crown, the poem asks what work, love and social duty demand—and whether any can stand alone.

What you’ll discover

  • A poet claims her life Follow Aurora as she seeks a living through writing, rather than a place as someone’s assistant.
  • Art meets social duty Enter a fierce argument where poetry and reform challenge each other’s claims to matter.
  • An ivy crown Meet Aurora wearing her poet’s crown in a scene both gentle and quietly comic.
  • Lives divided by class Encounter Marian Erle, whose gentleness and poverty bring the cousins’ ideals into sharper focus.
  • A story carried by verse Experience love, scandal and travel through Aurora’s direct voice and the movement of blank verse.

In short

What happens when a woman tells a man she will not marry him because she has work of her own to do? That is the question at the heart of Aurora Leigh, a poem that reads like a novel.

A motherless child grows up in Italy

Aurora Leigh begins as a portrait of her own life. She is born in Florence to a Tuscan mother who dies when Aurora is four. Her father, a quiet English scholar, had fallen in love in a single moment, watching a church procession. After his wife's death he carries his small daughter into the mountains above Pelago, because he thinks a motherless child needs Mother Nature most.

What is Aurora Leigh about?

It follows a young poet raised in Italy and England who turns down her cousin's marriage offer to pursue her art. Her path crosses a poor seamstress and a scheming noblewoman, and it asks how art, love and work fit together.

Is Aurora Leigh a novel or a poem?

It is both. Barrett Browning wrote it as a long blank verse poem with a continuous plot, a first-person narrator and many scenes of dialogue, which is why people call it a verse novel.

Is Aurora Leigh based on a true story?

The characters are invented, yet the poem draws on the author's own life, including her Italian home, her reading and her writing life. It was published in 1856, in a Victorian setting shaped by real debates about poverty and women's roles.
