About this book

What fills the dark when sleep will not come, and grief leaves you alone with time?

In Young's Night Thoughts, Edward Young gives us a speaker awake while the world rests. Across nine parts, called Nights, this long poem turns sleeplessness into a meditation on life, death and the soul. The opening address to sleep leads into urgent questions about wasted hours, friendship and loss.

The speaker mourns Narcissa, a young woman who has died, and addresses Lorenzo, an imagined, pleasure-loving unbeliever. Their argument reaches beyond sorrow: what makes life meaningful, and what are ambition and worldly rewards worth? Young's speaker argues for Christian faith and immortality, setting religious hope against doubt in steady, unrhymed verse.

A poem born in the dark hours

Edward Young was born in 1683 and became a clergyman after trying his luck at court, at the law and at the stage. He had written satires on the love of fame and a tragedy before he turned, in his late fifties, to the work that made his name across Europe. Night Thoughts was published in parts, one Night at a time, so that early readers waited for each new instalment.

What is Young's Night Thoughts about?

It is a poem in nine Nights about life, death and immortality. A sleepless speaker reflects on time, grief and loss, and argues for faith in the soul's survival, often speaking to an unbelieving friend named Lorenzo.

Who is Lorenzo in Night Thoughts?

Lorenzo is an imagined listener, a clever, pleasure-loving unbeliever whom the speaker tries to persuade. He represents anyone who puts off serious questions about death and the soul, and he is addressed throughout much of the poem.

Who is Narcissa in Young's Night Thoughts?

Narcissa is a young woman whose death is mourned in Night Three. Tradition links her to Young's stepdaughter, though the poem works as elegy without that knowledge. Her story is the most personal part of the work.
