About this book
What does freedom cost when desire draws you into a world of frozen rivers and remote camps?
In A Girl of the Klondike, Victoria Cross brings romance into the hard landscape of the Yukon gold rush. A young woman stands at the heart of a story shaped by desire, survival and independence. Around her lies a world of snow, rivers and rough camps, where the search for fortune meets the demands of a cold, distant place.
Cross puts strong feeling at the centre of this frontier romance. Passion presses against hardship, while the wish for freedom raises questions about its price. Read it for that contrast: human wants against a harsh landscape, the pull of independence against the need to survive. This is a tale of emotion and adventure, rather than a precise record of the Klondike.

A girl with pistols meets two men
The story begins in the dark of an Alaskan winter. The mountain passes are closed by snow, and the gold camps are cut off. In Dawson, a glow of lamplight hangs over the town, and its talk is all of a strike made that afternoon. In the Pistol Shot saloon, Katrine Poniatovsky leans against the bar with a pair of revolvers in her belt. She is about nineteen, and she watches the crowd with weary scorn.
A shy young man named Stephen Wood stands near her. He came to the Klondike to do missionary work, but he now holds one of the best claims in the west gulch. Katrine teases him about setting religion aside until he is rich. Soon they are joined by Henry Talbot, the neighbor whose claim lies beside Stephen's. Talbot is tall, pale and finely mannered, and the three take to each other at once.
