About this book
What can love build when the world that promises shelter begins to lose its strength?
In A Nest in the Ruins, Léon de Tinseau brings private feeling into contact with rank, family and reputation. This French society novel explores a world where honour matters and love must reckon with social convention. The heart has its claims, but so does the family name.
The title holds a quiet contrast: a nest offers warmth and shelter, while ruins recall an older, grander world. That image invites you to consider what people can make for themselves when familiar structures weaken. The appeal lies in matters of the heart, approached at a slower, more reflective pace.

In short
Imagine standing in a Paris tableau while a dark-haired marquis grips your wrist, and the next day a columnist calls you Marguerite and him Mephistopheles. That is the first great scene of A Nest in the Ruins, a two-part novel by Léon de Tinseau.

A living picture binds Hedwige to Noircombe
Hedwige is nineteen when her father, a diplomat, is sent to Paris. She runs his household and waltzes so well that Napoleon III invites her to dance. She is happy, and engaged to her cousin Otto, whom she loves only like a brother.
Then comes an evening of living pictures. Hedwige plays Ophelia, and her Hamlet is the Marquis de Noircombe, a pale, handsome man known for charming women and keeping none. When he grips her wrist on stage, she feels her will wither like a flower scorched by a satanic breath.

What is A Nest in the Ruins about?
It is a two-part French novel. The first part follows Hedwige de Tiesendorf through a ruinous marriage and her work to secure her daughter's future. The second follows Clotilde Falconneau, a sick girl in Algeria, who finds hope in letters from a stranger.
Who is the Marquis de Noircombe?
He is a handsome nobleman with an ancient name and little money. Hedwige already knows him as a dance partner when they play Hamlet and Ophelia in a living picture. His obsession with cards shapes the whole first part of the story.
Why are there two stories in one book?
The two parts are linked by theme more than by plot. Both ask whether love can be trusted when it grows out of fear, illusion or words, and a short retelling of the Psyche myth stands between them as a guide.
