About this book
What if the quietest man in the room understands the crime better than every expert?
In The Wisdom of Father Brown, G. K. Chesterton brings together twelve detective stories about a plain Catholic priest with an uncommon gift for listening. Murders, thefts, fraud and disguise draw him into strange houses and lonely places, where confident explanations often hide a failure to understand people.
Father Brown carries an umbrella and untidy brown paper parcels, not the air of a brilliant investigator. His loyal friend Flambeau, a former master thief turned detective, often joins him. Against experts such as criminologist Dr Orion Hood and machine-trusting Greywood Usher, Brown brings mild questions, plain sense and a deep knowledge of human weakness.

A famous scientist reads a room wrongly
The book opens at Scarborough, in the rooms of Dr Orion Hood, a criminologist who prides himself on cold science. Father Brown shuffles in to ask help for a young couple. Maggie MacNab wants to marry her lodger, James Todhunter, but her mother objects. Hood finds the request absurd, yet he agrees to listen.
The story is odd. Todhunter locks himself in his room for hours, and the household whispers about two voices behind the door. Then Maggie bursts in, sure that her lodger has been murdered by a man called Glass. The three break into the house and find scattered cards, a smashed glass, a strange blade, a tall hat, and Todhunter bound on the floor. From the hat Hood builds a full portrait of Mr Glass, and from the knots he builds a crime.

Who is Father Brown and who is Flambeau?
Father Brown is a modest priest with a shabby umbrella who solves mysteries by listening to people. Flambeau is his tall friend, once a famous thief and now a detective, who often takes Brown on journeys and helps with the physical side of the cases.
Do I need to read the other Father Brown books first?
No. Each story stands alone, with its own setting, suspects and surprise. Flambeau and Brown are introduced clearly when they appear, so you can start with this collection and enjoy every tale without any earlier background.
