About this book

What good is a sharp mind when war, love, and betrayal pull you in different directions?

In Gaston Leroux’s The Strange Wedding of Rouletabille, a young journalist enters the Balkans as war shakes the region. Rouletabille brings a stubborn character and a mind trained to reason. But amid shifting borders and old hatreds, he faces a world where rumor can carry more weight than thought.

His work takes him toward danger, but the front is only part of the story. Love and betrayal put his heart under strain, and the title holds out the promise of a wedding. Leroux draws on the pace of French newspaper serials, keeping each chapter pointed toward the next.

What is The Strange Wedding of Rouletabille about?

It follows the young reporter Rouletabille through the first Balkan War in 1913 as he pursues Ivana Vilitchkov, the woman he loves, whose strange actions he cannot explain. Along the way he faces armies, spies, rivals and a mystery from the Black Castle.

Who is Rouletabille?

Joseph Rouletabille is a young French reporter for L'Époque, known across the world for solving crimes with his clear reasoning. Gaston Leroux created him in The Mystery of the Yellow Room, and he returns in several later adventures.

Do I need to read the earlier Rouletabille books first?

No. The narrator gives enough background about the Black Castle, Ivana and the reporters, so a reader can start here. Earlier books deepen the picture, but the plot, the characters and the humor stand on their own.
