About this book

Can you laugh at a man's faults and still love his company?

Meet Sir Roger de Coverley, a kind, eccentric baronet from Worcestershire, through the watchful eyes of Mr. Spectator. Around them gathers a fictional club where news, manners and competing views of life invite gentle comedy. Sir Andrew Freeport values trade and thrift; Will Honeycomb brings gossip and talk of dress.

The Sir Roger de Coverley Papers brings together essays by Joseph Addison, Richard Steele and Eustace Budgell. Their gentle story moves from the club to Sir Roger's country house, his place among his neighbours and his visits to London. Beneath the jokes lies a steady concern: how good sense and kindness can shape daily life.

A silent observer founds a club

The series opens with Mr. Spectator, the imagined author of the whole paper. He tells us that he is a man who has seen much of the world and says little in it. He sits in coffee houses and public places, listens, and then writes down what he has noticed. He is a kind of eye, and his silence lets everyone else speak.
