About this book

What matters more than numbers when an army must move, fight, or retreat?

The Officer's Manual: Napoleon's Maxims of War presents seventy-eight short rules on warfare and command. Its numbered maxims follow an army through the march, the camp, the battle, the fortress and the retreat. At every stage, they ask what a commander must understand before choosing where and when to act.

Napoleon's central idea is concrete: keep your strength together and strike where it counts. Alongside concentration of force, he examines speed, surprise, supply and morale. This is not a story of his campaigns, but a collection of compact lessons that invites you to weigh his thinking about war—and about leading people under pressure.

What you’ll discover

  • Strength at the decisive place Explore why Napoleon values concentrated force over superior numbers spread across the ground.

Read the ground and keep one line open

Napoleon begins with geography. The borders of states, he says, are formed by great rivers, mountain ranges and deserts, and these are the natural obstacles to an army. A commander who plans a campaign starts by reading these barriers, because they decide where he can go and from where the enemy can come.
