About this book

What if a child's freedom to work is the beginning of discipline, not its enemy?

In The Montessori Method, Maria Montessori begins with close observation of young children. Her starting point is the Children's House in Rome, a school for poor children whose parents work all day. Small furniture, simple materials and time give her a setting in which to watch how learning unfolds.

Montessori asks what changes when a school is built around the child rather than the teacher. She explores the room, daily tasks, sensory materials and the teaching of writing. At stake is a different understanding of independence: children learn self-control through purposeful work, she argues, rather than through demands to sit still and obey.

What you’ll discover

  • Observation before theory Follow Montessori's patient attention to real children, and consider what their choices reveal about learning.
  • A room that teaches Explore how small furniture and carefully chosen materials help place the child at the center.
  • Freedom with a purpose Examine her argument that meaningful work helps children develop concentration, self-control and independence.
  • The teacher steps back Consider a teacher's role built around guidance and observation, rather than constant instruction.
  • Hands prepare for writing Discover why Montessori begins with the hand and argues that writing can come before reading.

Who will love it

Begin by watching real children closely

Montessori did not start with a theory of education. She started as a physician and a scientist, trained to observe. In 1896 she had become one of the first women in Italy to earn a medical degree. Her early work was with children labeled deficient, and she learned much from the earlier French doctors Jean Itard and Edouard Seguin, who had taught such children through physical materials.

What is The Montessori Method about?

It describes how Maria Montessori taught young children in a Rome school from 1907. It explains her prepared classroom, her learning materials, her views on freedom and discipline, and how children learn to write and read through touch and choice.

What are the main principles of the Montessori method?

The main principles are careful observation of the child, a prepared environment, freedom within limits, self-correcting materials, hands-on learning and a teacher who guides instead of lecturing. Children choose their work and are trusted to concentrate on it.

When was The Montessori Method written?

Montessori first published it in Italian in 1909, based on her work at the first Children's House in Rome, opened in 1907. The English translation appeared in 1912 and brought the method to schools in many other countries.
