About this book
What if the man outside the law is the one who stands up for justice?
In Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood makes a home beyond the reach of those who misuse their power. A master archer and a friend to the poor, he gathers the Merry Men around him. Bertha E. Bush's Stories of Robin Hood brings together the old English tales of his courage, loyalty, and quick wit.
The Sheriff of Nottingham keeps laying plans to catch Robin, while strangers test the outlaw's strength, skill, and humor. Rivals can become companions, and friendship matters as much as a steady bow. With Little John, Friar Tuck, and Will Scarlet among the greenwood company, these lively stories ask what justice means when the law serves the rich.

A boy's anger at injustice shapes the outlaw
The book opens with a boy and his father meeting a man from their old village. The man brings sad news. Peter the Ploughman, a friend of the family, has been hanged. His wife and little ones have been thrown out of their home to beg.
The boy asks why, and the answers come one by one. Huntsmen had trampled the ploughman's crops. The tax collector had taken everything else. His children were crying from hunger, so Peter shot deer to feed them, and the sheriff caught him. Then an abbot wanted the family's small patch of ground for his garden, and the widow was sent away.
