About this book
What happens when a mirror tells the truth and a queen cannot bear to hear it?
In Snowdrop, also known as Snow White, a young princess faces her stepmother’s jealousy. The Queen asks her magic mirror who is fairest, and its honest answer puts the child in danger. Alone in the forest, Snowdrop searches for safety among huge trees, sharp stones and watchful wild animals.
Snowdrop & Other Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm opens a world of magic, courage and danger. Alongside the title tale, the companion stories lead into woods and homes under strain, where poor youngest sons, clever animals and small people with strange powers face sharp choices. The plots move quickly, and good and evil stand clearly apart.

In short
Snowdrop and Other Tales gathers fairy tales from the collection made by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, two German scholars of language and folklore. They published their first volume of Children's and Household Tales in 1812 and kept revising it for decades.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A wish in the snow begins everything
The title tale opens in the middle of winter, while snowflakes fall like feathers from the sky. A queen sits sewing at a window with a frame of black ebony wood. She pricks her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fall onto the snow. The red looks so lovely against the white that she sighs and makes a wish.
She wishes for a child as white as snow, as red as blood and as black as the wood of the window frame. The wish is granted, and a daughter is born with skin, lips and hair of those three colors. The girl is called Snowdrop, and many readers know her as Snow White.

What is Snowdrop by the Brothers Grimm about?
It is the tale known elsewhere as Snow White. A girl born from her mother's wish is hated by a vain stepmother whose mirror names Snowdrop the fairest, and she finds shelter with seven dwarfs in the forest.
Is Snowdrop the same story as Snow White?
Yes. Snow White is the usual modern title for the same Grimm tale, while Snowdrop is a name some English translators gave her. The main people and events are the same.
Are the Grimm fairy tales true stories?
No, they are folk tales. The Grimms collected and shaped stories told in German-speaking lands, publishing the first volume in 1812 and revising the collection until 1857. They are not records of real events.
