About this book

At Henry VIII’s court, the king’s favor offers safety—and his changing mood puts everything at risk.

In Privy Seal, Ford Madox Ford brings Katharine Howard into a court where power depends on closeness to the king. Young, noble, and devoted to the old Catholic faith, she hopes to guide her country toward her beliefs. Henry VIII’s interest changes her place, but conviction offers no shelter from court intrigue.

Against Katharine stands Thomas Cromwell, the Lord Privy Seal, a sharp-minded minister who backs the new church order and guards his fragile position. Nicholas Throckmorton, drawn to Katharine, must weigh his loyalties. This second novel in The Fifth Queen trilogy follows their competing purposes through shifting impressions rather than a straight, fully explained path.
