About this book

What if your nightmares carry you into an ancestor’s life, where hunger, beasts, and cruelty leave nowhere safe?

In Jack London’s Before Adam, a man is haunted from childhood by dreams of falling, trees, and beasts. He comes to believe these visions are inherited memories. In sleep, he lives as Big-Tooth, a young member of the Folk in a prehistoric world. What feels like a nightmare becomes a struggle to survive in forests and along rivers.

Big-Tooth wants a safer, freer life, but danger comes from within his own tribe as well as the forest. His loyal friend Lop-Ear shares his risks, while the cruel Red-Eye threatens the weak. The brave Swift One becomes close to him. Through their struggles, London explores friendship, fear, and the unsettling idea that we carry our ancestors inside us.

What you’ll discover

  • Dreams with deep roots Follow a narrator who sees his troubled sleep as a doorway into ancestral memory.

  • Cruelty among the Folk Meet Red-Eye, whose strength makes life harder for those who cannot stand against him.
  • The power of fire Glimpse the Fire People, whose tools and fire seem strange and powerful to the Folk.

A city boy dreams a world he never saw

The book opens with a child who cannot explain his nights. He grows up in a city, yet he never dreams of houses or streets. He dreams of huge forests, and he knows every tree in them by its leaf and twig. The first time he sees a real oak, he feels the jolt of meeting an old acquaintance.

What is Before Adam about?

It is about a modern man whose dreams hold the life of a distant ancestor, Big-Tooth. He tells of his friend Lop-Ear, the bully Red-Eye, the Swift One, and the dangerous Fire People in a world before modern humans.

Who is Big-Tooth in Before Adam?

Big-Tooth is the name the narrator gives his ancestor. The Folk have no names, so the narrator invents them. The modern man sees through Big-Tooth's eyes in his dreams and tells his story in the first person.

What does racial memory mean in Before Adam?

It is the idea that experiences are stamped into heredity and passed down, so descendants dream of what ancestors lived. The narrator uses it to explain falling dreams and his own unusually vivid memories of a far-off life.
