About this book
What does it cost to make a hard land prosper—and who gets to share in the harvest?
On Nebraska’s bare high plains, Alexandra Bergson sees a future her family can barely imagine. After her father’s death, the young Swedish immigrant takes charge of their struggling farm. Crops fail, cattle die, and neighbors leave. In Willa Cather’s O Pioneers!, Alexandra’s calm resolve meets both the prairie’s hardships and her brothers’ doubts.
Across the years, the farm’s fortunes change, but prosperity brings no simple peace. Alexandra hopes to give her youngest brother, Emil, a wider life through education. Her neighbor Marie Shabata brings warmth to an unhappy marriage. Around them, loyalty, longing, and arguments over family property test what hard work can secure—and what it cannot.

A kitten rescue opens a winter day
The story opens in Hanover, a town of low wooden buildings on the Nebraska tableland. Five-year-old Emil Bergson sits on a sidewalk in a coat far too big for him. His kitten has been chased up a telegraph pole by a dog.
His sister Alexandra cannot coax the kitten down, so she goes to find Carl Linstrum, a thin fifteen-year-old. Carl straps spikes to his shoes, climbs to the top, and brings the frightened animal down. A little Bohemian girl named Marie Tovesky ties her handkerchief on the kitten like a bonnet. Cather plants here the three young people who will matter most later.

What is O Pioneers! about?
It follows Alexandra Bergson, a young Swedish American woman who takes over her dying father's farm on the Nebraska prairie. She builds it into a rich estate while friendship, family conflict and a dangerous love story unfold around her.
Who is Alexandra Bergson?
Alexandra is the eldest child of John Bergson, a Swedish settler. Clear-headed, calm and brave, she studies the land, ignores doubters, and uses her father's trust to build one of the richest farms on the Divide.
What does the Divide mean in O Pioneers!?
The Divide is the high, windswept tableland of Nebraska where the Bergsons and their neighbors farm. It starts as wild, hostile prairie and becomes, over sixteen years, a busy checkerboard of wheat and corn.
