About this book
What makes a childhood friendship stay alive long after two lives begin to drift apart?
Ten-year-old orphan Jim Burden rides west to live with his grandparents in Nebraska. On the same train, Ántonia Shimerda and her family travel from Bohemia toward an uncertain life on the prairie. Their new farm offers little comfort, and friendship grows where both children must learn to belong.
In My Ántonia, Willa Cather follows Jim’s memories through farm seasons, fierce winters, and the freedoms of town life. Ántonia works to help her struggling family, while Jim’s path leads toward college. Their bond gives this quiet novel its pull: how do we remember someone whose life takes a different course from our own?

A boy arrives on the empty prairie
The book opens on a train. An unnamed friend of Jim Burden tells us that he and Jim once talked about a girl they both knew in childhood, and that Jim promised to write down what he remembered of her. Jim then takes over, and his story begins with his own journey. After his parents die, ten-year-old Jim is sent from Virginia to his grandparents in Black Hawk, Nebraska. A hired man named Jake Marpole travels with him.
On the way they meet a family of immigrants who speak almost no English. The father, Mr. Shimerda, is gentle and frail. The mother is sharp and anxious to provide for her children. The oldest daughter is called Ántonia, and she is about fourteen. Jim, shy and curious, watches the family from a distance.
