About this book
What if saving souls depends on money made from guns?
In Bernard Shaw’s three-act comedy Major Barbara, Barbara Undershaft trusts kindness, soup and prayer to save souls. Her father, Andrew Undershaft, makes guns and explosives, and calls poverty the worst crime. When these two meet, charity faces a hard question: can good work stand apart from the money that supports it?
Lady Britomart needs her absent husband’s money for their daughters. His arrival unsettles the family, but the argument reaches beyond her London home. At a Salvation Army shelter in West Ham, Barbara holds real authority. There, among people who need help, her convictions face a test that wit alone cannot settle.

In short
Major Barbara is a play in three acts by Bernard Shaw, first staged in London in 1905. Shaw wrote it as a comedy of ideas, and it argues with its audience as much as it entertains them.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A mother summons her absent husband
The play opens in the library of Lady Britomart Undershaft's house in Wilton Crescent, London. She is a commanding woman who has run her family for years without her husband. She calls in her grown son Stephen to talk about money and about the future of his sisters. Stephen is earnest, shy and rather priggish, and he is quick to say what is proper.
Lady Britomart explains that her husband, Andrew Undershaft, left the household long ago. He is a manufacturer of armaments, and she has refused to see him for years. Yet he is very rich, and her family's own income is limited. Her daughter Sarah is engaged to a cheerful young man named Charles Lomax, who has hopes but little money. Her daughter Barbara is engaged to Adolphus Cusins, a professor of Greek.
