An anonymous sermon wearing Clement's name
The Second Epistle of Clement survives in Greek. Two main manuscripts carry it. One is Codex Alexandrinus, a Bible copied in the fifth century, which places the text after the New Testament books. The other is Codex Hierosolymitanus, copied in 1056 and found in Constantinople by the scholar Philotheos Bryennios in 1875. That second find gave readers the complete text, because Alexandrinus is missing its last pages. A Syriac translation also exists.
The name in the manuscripts is a puzzle. The First Epistle of Clement is a genuine letter from the church at Rome to the church at Corinth, and it is written in a different style. Most scholars hold that the second work is by another writer. Some think it came from Rome, others from Corinth, and a few suggest Alexandria. Nobody can say for sure, and the honest answer is that we do not know who spoke these words or where.
