The ancient world had a different relationship to authorship than we do. Writing in the name of a revered teacher was not necessarily an act of deception; it could be understood as an act of faithful interpretation, a way of asking 'what would Paul say to this community, in this situation, given everything we know about his teaching?' Chapter 1

Paul, an apostle not of men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ, to the brothers and sisters at Laodicea. Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to Christ in all my prayers that you continue in him and persevere in his works, looking toward the promise that awaits us at the day of judgment. Do not let the empty talk of certain people unsettle you — those who creep in trying to turn you away from the truth of the Gospel that I have preached to you.

God will see to it that those who belong to me continue serving the growth of the truth of the Gospel, doing good, and advancing the work of salvation, which is eternal life. My chains are now visible to everyone; I bear them for Christ, and in them I rejoice and am glad. This is for my everlasting salvation, which is also brought about by your prayers and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, whether through my life or my death. For truly, to me life is Christ, and to die is joy.

And through him God will work his mercy in you, so that you may share the same love and be of one mind. Therefore, dear friends, just as you have heard while I was with you, hold fast and live in the fear of God, and it will mean eternal life for you. For it is God who works in you. Do everything without hesitation.

And finally, dear friends, rejoice in Christ, and beware of those who are greedy for dishonest gain. Bring all your requests openly before God, and stand firm in the mind of Christ. Whatever is sound and true, whatever is sober and just and worthy of love — do these things. And what you have heard and received, hold fast in your heart.
