The earliest followers of Jesus did not think of themselves as founding a new religion. They were Jews — most of them — who believed that the God of Israel had acted decisively in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to inaugurate a new age, the long-awaited kingdom of God. But as the movement spread beyond Palestine, beyond the Jewish world, into the Greek-speaking cities of the Roman Empire, it encountered new questions, new intellectual frameworks, and new spiritual hungers that the original Palestinian communities had never had to address. What was the relationship between the God of Jesus and the God of the Hebrew scriptures? What was the nature of Jesus himself — fully human, fully divine, some combination of both, or something that transcended those categories entirely? What happened to the soul after death? How was salvation achieved — through faith, through knowledge, through ritual, through ethical transformation, through mystical experience? What was the role of the physical body in spiritual life?

These were not abstract academic questions. They were urgent, existential matters on which communities staked their identities, their practices, and their hopes. And different communities answered them differently, drawing on different aspects of the Jesus tradition, different philosophical resources, and different spiritual experiences. The diversity was not a sign of confusion or corruption — it was the natural expression of a living tradition encountering the full complexity of human experience.

The text before you emerges from this world of diversity and debate. Its authors — and there were almost certainly multiple hands involved in its composition and transmission, as was common with ancient documents of this kind — were not naive. They were sophisticated thinkers who had absorbed the philosophical currents of their age and were attempting to articulate a vision of Jesus and his teaching that could speak to the deepest spiritual needs of their community. They drew on oral traditions that may well have preserved authentic memories of Jesus's words and deeds. They also drew on the interpretive frameworks available to them — Jewish mystical traditions, Platonic philosophy, the emerging vocabulary of what we now call Gnosticism — to make sense of those memories and to explore their implications.

One of the most striking features of this document, and one that will reward careful attention, is its treatment of the relationship between knowledge and salvation. The Greek word gnosis simply means knowledge, but in the context of early Christian spirituality it carried a very specific and weighted meaning. The tradition that emphasized this kind of knowledge as the heart of what Jesus offered was not, as its critics claimed, an elitist perversion of a simpler gospel. John's mystical vision soars into registers that the more practically minded James finds difficult to follow. These tensions are not editorial failures. They are the point. The text is arguing, through its very structure, that the divine truth is too large for any single perspective to contain, and that the community of seekers is itself a kind of collective instrument for approaching what no individual can fully grasp.

This is a profoundly democratic spiritual vision, and it is one that speaks with particular urgency to our own moment. We live in an age of fracture — political, cultural, religious — in which the temptation to retreat into the certainties of a single perspective, a single tribe, a single authorized version of reality, is powerful and pervasive. It is a question that honest readers must ask of the canonical gospels themselves, which were composed decades after the events they describe, in languages that Jesus did not speak, by authors who were not eyewitnesses to what they narrate, and which contain significant internal contradictions that no amount of harmonizing ingenuity has ever fully resolved. The canonical gospels are not straightforward historical documents — they are theological narratives, shaped by the convictions and pastoral concerns of the communities that produced them, using the historical memory of Jesus as the raw material for a sustained act of meaning-making. This does not make them less valuable. It makes them more interesting, more human, and more honest about what religious texts actually are and what they actually do.

The same framework applies here. The document before you makes certain claims about its own origin and transmission. Those claims deserve to be taken seriously, examined carefully, and assessed with the full range of tools that modern scholarship makes available. Chapter 1

PROLOGUE

The Eternal Thought has existed forever, and the Thought is the Word, and the Word is the Action, and these three are one in the Eternal Law, and the Law is with God and the Law comes from God. All things are created by the Law, and nothing that exists was created without it. In the Word is Life and Substance, the Fire and the Light. Love and Wisdom are one for the salvation of all. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not hide it. The Word is the one life-giving fire, which shines into the world and becomes the fire and light of every soul that enters the world. I am in the world, and the world is in Me, and the world does not know it. I come to my own house, and my friends do not welcome me. But all who receive and obey are given the power to become the sons and daughters of God, even those who believe in the Holy Name, who are born—not from human desire, but from God. And the Word became human and lived among us, and we saw its glory, full of grace. Look at the goodness, truth, and beauty of God!

Chapter 2

Of John The Baptist

1. DURING the time of Herod, the king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, who belonged to the priestly group of Abijah; and his wife, named Elizabeth, was a descendant of Aaron.

2. They were both good people in God's eyes, following all the Lord's commands and rules perfectly. They had no children because Elizabeth could not have any, and they were both very old.

3. It happened that while he was serving as a priest before God when his group was on duty, it was his turn, chosen by lottery according to the temple custom, to go into the temple of the LORD. And a large crowd of people was praying outside at the time the incense was offered.

4. An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing by the altar of incense. When Zacharias saw the angel, he was startled and became very afraid. But the angel said to him, "Don't be afraid, Zacharias, because your prayer has been heard; your wife Elizabeth will have a son, and you will name him John."

5. You will have joy and happiness, and many will be happy about his birth; for he will be great in the Lord's eyes, and will not eat meat or drink alcohol; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from before he is born.

6. He will bring many of the people of Israel back to the Lord their God. And he will go before the Lord with the same spirit and power as Elijah, to turn the hearts of parents to their children, and to turn those who disobey to the wisdom of those who do right, to prepare a people for the Lord.

7. And Zacharias said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is also very old." The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news."

8. And now, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this happens. Then your tongue will be freed so that you will believe my words, which will come true at the right time.

9. The people were waiting for Zacharias and wondered why he was staying so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they realized he had seen a vision in the temple, because he kept making signs to them and remained speechless.

10. It happened that as soon as his time of service was over, he went home. After that, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and she stayed in seclusion for five months, saying, "This is how the Lord has treated me now that he has looked on me to take away my shame among people."
