About this book
What stories grow in the spaces between the Bible’s lines?
The Chronicles of Jerahmeel gathers sacred history and Jewish legend into a vast medieval Hebrew anthology. Attributed to Jerahmeel ben Solomon, it holds many voices rather than a single account. Creation, the first humans and the world before the Flood unfold through retellings that add details drawn from rabbinic tradition.
The collection follows Abraham, Joseph and the road to Egypt, then turns to Moses, the Exodus and the giving of the Law. Alongside these familiar accounts stand tales of fallen angels, including Shemhazai and Azael. Later sections reach beyond the Torah into further ages of Israel’s history, preserving many voices rather than one continuous story.

“Better is a good name than precious oil.”
In short
Before God makes Adam, he asks the angels for their counsel. The first company asks what is man, that you should remember him, and God destroys them with his little finger.

A mosaic of older voices from creation onward
The Chronicles of Jerahmeel is a compilation, not a single story. The compiler tells us plainly where he finds things. He cites the Book of Jasher, the chapters of Rabbi Eliezer, the history called Josippon and the writings attributed to Philo.
The order follows sacred history, from creation through Adam, the flood, the patriarchs, Egypt and Sinai to Persia, Greece and the Maccabees. Within that frame the pieces keep their own voices. A rabbi lectures, a patriarch charges his sons, and a prayer stands beside a battle report.

What is the Chronicles of Jerahmeel about?
It is a medieval Hebrew anthology that retells sacred history from creation through the Maccabees. It gathers midrash, legend, apocryphal tales and chronicle, from angels and the first man to Abraham, Moses, Daniel, Esther and Judah Maccabee.
Who was Jerahmeel ben Solomon?
He is the compiler named in the work itself. Scholars place him in the medieval period and disagree on where and when he worked, with southern Italy in the eleventh or twelfth century often suggested. He collected older writings rather than composing new ones.
Is the Chronicles of Jerahmeel part of the Bible?
No. It is a later anthology that retells and expands biblical stories using midrash and other sources. It includes tales that also appear in the Apocrypha, such as Susanna and Bel and the dragon, but it was never part of a canon.
