About this book

A sword waits in a stone, while a country without a strong ruler suffers.

In Mary Macgregor’s Stories of King Arthur’s Knights, Told to the Children, a boy draws that sword and becomes king. Guided by Merlin, Arthur builds a fellowship sworn to protect the weak. Queen Guinevere brings the Round Table to Camelot, where no knight sits above another.

Beyond the court, quests lead through forests and across rivers. Gareth hides his royal rank and must earn trust through patience and courage. Launcelot rides to help those in need, while Galahad takes up the search for the Holy Grail. Yet pride, jealousy and love strain the promises that hold Arthur’s kingdom together.

What is Stories of King Arthur's Knights about?

It is a set of six tales about the knights of Camelot, including Geraint and Enid, Lancelot and Elaine, Pelleas and Ettarde, Gareth and Lynette, Galahad and the Holy Grail, and the last battle of King Arthur.

Where do these stories come from?

Mary Macgregor says most of them come from Sir Thomas Malory's English book, written more than four hundred years before her time. Geraint and Enid comes from the old Welsh tales about Arthur's knights.

Who is the Lily Maid of Astolat?

She is Elaine, the daughter of the Baron of Astolat. The country people give her this name because she walks past their gardens in white, looking as tall, graceful and pure as the lilies.

The author

Mary Macgregor

1760–1816 · British children's author

Mary Macgregor was a writer who retold famous stories for children in simple language. This book draws on the English tales of Sir Thomas Malory and on old Welsh tales of Arthur's court. She also wrote children's retellings of other legends and histories. Little else is certain about her life, but the book itself shows her aim of telling old stories clearly for young listeners.
