About this book
What if a ruined abbey, a mountain spring, or a moonlit path holds something the living cannot explain?
In Romantic Legends of Spain, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer turns old rumours and local traditions into tales of longing and fear. The Mountain of the Spirits takes you to Soria on All Souls Night, where Beatriz's wish sends her cousin Alonso toward a haunted mountain. Love draws him toward what others dread.
The Green Eyes follows Fernando de Argensola, a hunter obsessed with eyes glimpsed in a spring. Master Pérez the Organist brings you to Seville and its beloved blind musician. In The Moonbeam, the dreamy poet Manrique wanders ruins at night. Across these stories, strange music and elusive visions bring the supernatural close.

A blind organist plays his last Christmas Mass
Master Pérez the Organist is set in Seville. On Christmas Eve the whole city crowds the portico of the convent of Santa Inés, nobles and street rabble alike, to hear one man play. He is Master Pérez, blind since birth, who plays the old convent organ by touch alone.
Other convents offer him gold, and the archbishop tries to lure him to the cathedral. He refuses every time.

What is Romantic Legends of Spain about?
It gathers short tales by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, set in Seville, Toledo, Soria, and the mountains of Aragon. Ghosts, haunted fountains, enchanted statues, and doomed lovers appear, and each legend is told by a different voice.
Are these legends true stories?
No, they are folk-style tales that Bécquer shaped from local traditions, and he often hints that he is only passing on what he heard. Real places and historical settings appear, but the supernatural events belong to legend.
When did Bécquer write the legends?
He wrote them in the nineteenth century, during the Romantic period in Spain, and he died in 1870. Many first appeared in newspapers, so most are short, each reading in a single sitting.
