About this book
A ship has her own character. The sea offers no friendship. A sailor must learn to face both.
In The Mirror of the Sea, Joseph Conrad gathers memories and reflections from almost twenty years in the merchant navy. These sea pieces follow no single plot. Instead, they bring you among gales, anchorages, ships and crews, where a sailor learns his trade through the daily demands of life afloat.
Conrad recalls old shipmates and vessels whose ways their crews come to know. He tells of the Tremolino and a youthful smuggling venture out of Marseilles, and pays tribute to Nelson and his sailors. Alongside these portraits runs a harder concern: missing ships, anxious waiting on shore, and the honour of seamanship.

In short
A boat pulls hard across a flat, silver Atlantic. In it a young officer races to save nine sailors from a sinking brig.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Landfall and Departure frame a sailor's life
Conrad opens with two words that landsmen misunderstand. A Landfall is the first sight of land at the end of a passage. A Departure is not the ship leaving port. It is the moment the seaman takes his last bearings of the coast and marks the first pencil dot on the chart.
Then he turns to the captains. Some leave home grieving. Others shut themselves in their cabins for days, which the officers take as a compliment of trust. Captain MacW eats heartily behind his door and answers questions kindly through the keyhole. Near land, the captain's spirit grows restless, and he stares ahead, eats little and sleeps less.
