About this book
What would you sacrifice to see a world no human eye has ever reached?
In New York, young Linley spends his inheritance on microscopes and instruments, but no lens can satisfy him. He wants to look deeper into the world of the very small than anyone before him. In The Diamond Lens, Fitz James O'Brien lets this charming, unreliable narrator draw you into a passion that leaves little room for other people.
Then a spirit circle offers an unexpected path. Through a medium, the supposed spirit of microscope maker Anton van Leeuwenhoek tells Linley how to make a perfect lens. But the secret requires a diamond far beyond his means. His search brings microscope science and spiritualism together, while Gothic darkness gathers around the question of what discovery might cost.

A boy's tiny lens becomes a lifelong passion
The story opens with a copper disk. When the narrator is no more than ten years old, a distant cousin drills a small hole in it and holds a drop of pure water inside. The device magnifies only about fifty times and shows blurred shapes. Even so, the boy's imagination catches fire, and he never forgets that first look.
He hunts for lenses everywhere. He smashes window panes that hold glass knots, takes fluid from the eyes of fish, and steals the lenses from his Aunt Agatha's spectacles. Every attempt fails, yet none cools his hunger. Then a real instrument arrives, a simple Field's microscope with a short book on the history of the science.

Who is Animula in The Diamond Lens?
Animula is the name Linley gives to a beautiful, human-shaped being he sees living inside a drop of water through his new lens. The name suggests a little soul, and she becomes the center of his feelings.
