About this book

What if a cathedral could teach you to read stone—and face the silence of your own prayers?

In Joris-Karl Huysmans's The Cathedral, Durtal settles beneath the towers of Chartres. A weary writer who has returned to the Catholic faith, he longs to understand the church and deepen his devotion. Its carved doorways and changing windows offer him much to study, but prayer brings no easy warmth.

Abbé Plomb helps him explore the cathedral's history and symbols. Abbé Gévresin counsels patience, while Madame Bavoil's simple devotion offers a quieter lesson. The novel follows visits, conversations and reflection. Durtal reads shapes, colours and numbers as expressions of medieval belief, while struggling with the distance between knowledge and faith.

Durtal watches the cathedral wake at dawn

The book begins in the dark, at five in the morning, when Durtal crosses the windy square at Chartres and slips into the cathedral. The nave feels like a forest of black trunks. He sits against a pillar and waits for the Virgin to wake.

What is The Cathedral by Huysmans about?

It follows Durtal, a Paris convert, who moves to Chartres and learns to read its cathedral through the symbols in its stone, glass and carvings, while he struggles with spiritual dryness and a wish for monastic life.

Who is Durtal in The Cathedral?

Durtal is a writer and recent convert who appears across several Huysmans novels. Here he lives near Chartres Cathedral, studies its meaning with two priests, and wrestles with boredom, prayer and the pull of the cloister.

Is The Cathedral a true story and when was it written?

It is a novel, but Chartres, its windows, porches and crypt are real, and the symbolic lore comes from medieval writers. Huysmans wrote it at the end of the nineteenth century, drawing on his own conversion.
