About this book
A small white house by the sea holds Anne’s dreams—but making a home takes more than hope.
In Anne's House of Dreams, L. M. Montgomery follows Anne Shirley from Green Gables into married life. After an orchard wedding, Anne leaves Avonlea with Gilbert Blythe. Their new home waits at Four Winds Harbour, where Gilbert begins his work as a doctor and Anne hopes to find friendship.
Beyond their door are neighbours with stories, strong opinions and hidden sorrow. Captain Jim tends the lighthouse and shares tales of the sea. Miss Cornelia Bryant speaks sharply but cares deeply. Leslie Moore carries a burden of duty. As the seasons turn, Anne discovers how affection, work and kindness shape a home.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Anne leaves Avonlea to become a bride
The story opens in the warm days of late summer at Green Gables. Anne is about to be married, and the house is full of bustle. Marilla Cuthbert is there, older now and still plain in her speech. Mrs. Rachel Lynde is there too, ready with advice and opinions. Anne has loved this farm since she first came to it as a thin, talkative child, and she knows she is about to leave it for good.
Old friends gather around her. Diana Barry, her dearest friend since childhood, is close at hand. Phil Gordon, whom Anne met at Redmond College, comes to join the happy week. The talk is of dresses, of the house to come, and of how quickly the years have gone by. Anne feels both joy and a small ache. She is gaining a husband and a home, yet she is giving up the room under the gable where she grew up.
