About this book

Beyond the Carpathian forests, market towns, shepherds and village fears fill a country that Emily Gerard wants you to know.

In The Land Beyond the Forest, Emily Gerard guides you through Transylvania, inside the great curve of the Carpathian Mountains. Her portrait draws on years of daily life rather than a short visit. Mountains and market towns share the page with weddings, fairs and the work of shepherds.

Gerard describes Saxons in walled towns, Roumanian villagers, Magyars, Jews and Armenians, each with distinct customs and traditions. She also records beliefs about ghosts, witches and vampires—the material that catches Bram Stoker’s attention. Her British Victorian outlook shapes the account, making its period attitudes part of what readers must weigh.

In short

Picture a town where grass grows between the paving stones, a little stream runs down every street, and every shop shuts at noon so its owner can eat dinner. Add a theatre inside an old fortress tower and wolves that finish off the toll gate dog each winter.

An army order sends a wife to Transylvania

The Austrian War Office moves military families around the empire like footballs. Now an order sends the author's husband from Galicia to Transylvania. Most wives would weep, but she decides it is wiser to think like a traveller than like an exile.

What is The Land Beyond the Forest about?

It is a travel memoir of two years the author spent in Transylvania in the 1880s. She describes Saxons, Romanians, Hungarians and Gypsies, their weddings, churches, music and superstitions, along with towns, wildlife and mountain excursions.

What does Transylvania mean?

The name means the land beyond the forest. People living west of the mountain barrier and its thick woods gave the region this name, much as we might speak of a land beyond the clouds.

Who are the Saxons in Transylvania?

They are descendants of German colonists invited by the Hungarian king in the twelfth century. They built fortified churches, schools and walled villages, and the author shows how they kept old German dress and customs for seven hundred years.
